About Our Guides
How accurate is the information here?+
We research every guide using multiple veterinary sources including the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center, AKC, PetMD, and peer-reviewed veterinary studies. We update guides regularly. Always consult your vet for personalised advice.
Why does the same food have different answers for different pets?+
Different animals metabolise foods very differently. Grapes are toxic to dogs and cats. Avocado's persin is dangerous to dogs — but lethal to birds even in tiny amounts. Onions are more toxic to cats per bodyweight. We account for all species-specific differences.
How often are guides updated?+
We review our database at least twice a year and update guides whenever new veterinary research is published. Report any errors via our Contact page and we'll review within 48 hours.
Can I trust "In Moderation" answers?+
"In moderation" means the food is not directly toxic but can cause problems if given too often or in large amounts. Always stick to the recommended serving, offer no more than twice a week, and monitor your pet closely.
Feeding & Safety
My pet just ate something dangerous — what do I do?+
Act immediately. Call the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (888-426-4435) or your vet right now. Do not wait for symptoms. Tell them exactly what was eaten and how much.
How do I safely introduce a new food?+
Start with half the recommended serving. Wait 24 hours and watch for digestive upset, itching, or unusual behaviour. If no reaction, offer the full serving next time. Never introduce multiple new foods at the same time.
What does the "10% treat rule" mean?+
Treats should make up no more than 10% of your pet's total daily calorie intake. The remaining 90% should come from a complete and balanced pet food.
Is organic produce safer for my pet?+
Organic reduces pesticide exposure but does not change the inherent safety of the food. Grapes are still toxic whether organic or not.
Using This Website
Are all pet breeds covered?+
We cover 32 breeds across 7 pet types. Food safety principles are largely consistent within a species, so guides for similar breeds are a good reference. We add more breeds regularly.
I found an error — how do I report it?+
Use our Contact page. Include the URL, the specific information you believe is incorrect, and your source. We review all corrections within 48 hours.
Can I share your guides?+
Yes! Please do. The more pet owners with access to accurate safety information, the better. Link back to our website when sharing.
